Star Seed is a beautiful, inhabitable, “Galactic seed pod in the sky,” designed and fabricated by Kate Raudenbush for Burning Man 2012. We worked alongside Kate to help realize her vision, collaborating through digital models to generate fabrication drawings. The entire project was made from laser cut steel plates and pipe, all rolled, welded and fabricated by Kate and her teams located in Oakland, CA and Brooklyn, NY.
Precision was of paramount importance as the team in Oakland fabricated the base while the team in Brooklyn fabricated the upper pod. Ultimately, they would drive each component across the country and assemble them in the desert. The result is a work of art that appears to be from another world. The project was also featured on the cover of the best-selling book about art at the festival, Burning Man: Art of Fire.
